Voice reporting

Say it out loud instead of typing it

Many people find it easier to say what happened than to write it. Speak turns speech into text in the browser, shows the words to check, and can keep a recording with the voice changed. Here is what that does, and what it doesn't.

Talk it through on a phone: the assistant asks a question and the person can type or speak
  1. You speakThree short questions, or a Speak button for any answer.
  2. On your phoneThe browser turns speech into text. You read it and correct it. If you keep a recording, its pitch is changed here first.
  3. Encrypted on arrivalThe changed recording is stored with your company's key. The original voice is never uploaded.
  4. The case teamThey read your words. If you kept a recording, they can play the changed voice, and every play is logged.

What it does today

Talk instead of typing

In the report form, signed-in employees can answer three short spoken questions in Hindi, English, Marathi, Tamil or Gujarati. The words appear as they speak.

A Speak button for any answer

Talk it through, the page for reporting without an account, and kiosk tablets have a Speak button for dictation in all six languages, Arabic included. It types; it keeps no recording.

Speech to text in the browser

Where the browser can do it on the device, the voice stays there. Where it can't, it asks: type instead, or use the browser's online speech service for this tab.

Voice changed, if you like

A recording is changed in pitch on the phone before it is uploaded, so the original voice is never sent. It is on by default; the person can untick it.

Encrypted, every play logged

A kept recording is encrypted with the company's key. Only the case team can play it, marked as changed by the reporter, and each play goes into the case history.

Or the text only

Untick Keep my recording and only the words are sent. Nothing about the voice reaches the case team.

What the product doesKeeping a recording is a choice the person makes, and the words are on screen to check and correct before anything is sent.

DPDP Act 2023

What it asksA voice is personal data, to be protected with reasonable security safeguards.

What the product doesThe change runs on the phone, recordings are encrypted with the company's key, and the person can send text only.

The limits of the voice change, said plainly

It is one layer of protection, not a guarantee that nobody will recognise you.

  • It moves the pitch up or down by an amount chosen at random, which wanders a little every second or so, and nothing about the choice is kept. It does not change your words, your accent or the way you speak.
  • If you choose the browser's online speech service, that service (Google in Chrome, Apple in Safari) hears your live voice, unchanged, while you speak.
  • A recording is uploaded, encrypted, each time you press Stop, before you send the report. If you never send it, it is deleted after a day.
  • Recordings are for signed-in employees, in five languages. Arabic, kiosks and reporting without an account use dictation only, with no recording.
  • If you are unsure, send the text only. The case team can act on the words alone.
